Tourniquets

A tourniquet is used to control life-threatening bleeding from an arm or leg when direct pressure is insufficient or cannot be maintained.

Tourniquets from CAT, SAM Medical, Safeguard Medical and TacMed Solutions. Choose a windlass tourniquet for an arm or leg, the elastic SWAT-T, or T-RING Flex for fingers and toes.

CAT, SAM XT, SWAT-T or SOF – what is the difference?

CAT Tourniquet Gen 7 has a free-moving internal band, a single-routing buckle and a windlass. It is recommended by the CoTCCC and comes in black and orange.

SAM XT Tourniquet uses the TRUFORCE buckle, which auto-locks at a predetermined circumferential force to reduce slack before the windlass is turned. SAM XT is also CoTCCC-recommended and comes in black and orange.

SOF Tourniquet Gen 5 combines a 3.8 cm polyester band, a detachable composite buckle and an aluminium windlass. The buckle can be opened for placement around a trapped limb.

SWAT-T Tourniquet is an elastic polyisoprene band without a windlass. It can function as a tourniquet, a pressure dressing or a securing wrap and comes in black and orange. Its construction and application differ from CAT, SAM XT and SOF, so training should use the model that is actually carried.

Genuine products, colour and storage

Choose orange when visibility matters and black for a dark or tactical setup. Function is unchanged between colours of the same model. Store the tourniquet where it can be reached, protect it from needless wear, and do not use the same unit for repeated training and emergency readiness.

For clinical procedures on fingers and toes, see the T-RING Flex digit tourniquet. Its purpose is different and it does not replace an extremity tourniquet for life-threatening bleeding from an arm or leg.

Vanliga frågor om tourniquets

Which tourniquet should I choose – CAT, SAM XT, SWAT-T or SOF?

CAT Gen 7 and SAM XT are CoTCCC-recommended windlass tourniquets; SAM XT has a buckle that reduces slack before winding. SOF Gen 5 has an aluminium windlass and an opening buckle. SWAT-T is an elastic multi-purpose band with a different application method. Choose a model on which your organisation trains and practises.

What is the difference between CAT Tourniquet Gen 7 and SAM XT?

Both are windlass tourniquets for arms and legs, and both are recommended by the CoTCCC. CAT Gen 7 uses a free-moving internal band and single-routing buckle. SAM XT uses the TRUFORCE buckle, which locks at a predetermined circumferential force to reduce slack before the windlass is turned. Practise with the model selected.

Is SWAT-T the same type of tourniquet as CAT and SAM XT?

No. SWAT-T is a broad elastic polyisoprene band that is stretched, wrapped and tucked without a windlass. It can also serve as a pressure dressing or securing wrap. CAT, SAM XT and SOF use a strap, buckle and windlass. Their different construction calls for different application techniques and training.

Can a tourniquet be used on fingers or toes?

A standard extremity tourniquet is designed for arms and legs, not individual fingers or toes. T-RING Flex is a separate digit tourniquet intended to create a bloodless field when treating finger and toe injuries. It has a different purpose and is not a substitute for a tourniquet in life-threatening extremity bleeding.
