Is a pocket mask needed if you only do compressions?
No. In cardiac arrest outside hospital, the untrained rescuer is advised to do chest compressions only, and that saves lives. The pocket mask is for those who are trained and can ventilate with 30 compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths — healthcare staff, CPR instructors and organised response teams.
Does the same pocket mask work on children?
Yes. The adult mask is used on children as it is, and on infants it is turned 180 degrees so that the narrow tip sits over the chin instead of the nose. Blow with a smaller volume — the chest should rise, no more. Check the seal again after every breath.
How often should the valve and filter be changed?
The valve with its filter is a single-use part and is changed after every real use. During training the filter is changed between participants. At the same time, check that the mask has not cracked and that it folds out to the right shape — a mask that has lain folded in the heat for several years is worth replacing.
