Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT) Generation 7 is a small and light tourniquet that can be used with one hand. It easily stops arterial bleeding in extremities such as arms and legs. The CAT has an adhesive tape and an adaptive friction buckle that allows it to fit on different circumferences. The tension arm has a mechanism that can create extensive pressure and can be easily operated with one hand. The tension arm can be easily locked with one hand, which can be further secured with velcro for easy transport.
According to L-ABCDE, life-threatening bleeding must be treated under L, i.e. Life-threatening situation. Less, not acutely life-threatening bleedings are treated under C (Circulation) as before. In some courses this is described as CAE concept.
Tourniquets can only be used on extremities (legs and arms) for other life-threatening bleeding, so pressure or tamponade is recommended as a first-line measure. Tamponing can be advantageously done with hemostatic dressings for stabilization until the damage can be repaired by surgery.
