Needles and cannulas
The word cannula covers three different things: the hypodermic needle fitted to the syringe, the peripheral IV catheter that stays in the vessel, and the blunt fill needle used only to draw up medication.
The full needle range in one place — BD Microlance for injection, BD Venflon Pro Safety as a peripheral IV catheter, plus fill and infusion needles from Terumo, KD-Fine and SOL-M.

What is the difference between a needle and a peripheral IV catheter?
A hypodermic needle is a steel needle fitted to the syringe during injection and removed straight afterwards. A peripheral IV catheter has a soft plastic catheter around the steel needle; the needle is withdrawn and the catheter remains in the vessel so fluids or medication can be given over a longer period.
Which gauge should I choose?
That is determined by the medication, the injection technique and the patient, not by the needle itself. Viscous medication and intramuscular injection call for a thicker and longer needle, while subcutaneous injection uses a shorter and thinner one. Follow the protocol that applies in your organisation.
Why must the fill needle be changed before injecting?
A needle that has passed through the rubber stopper of an ampoule or vial becomes blunter and can carry particles from the stopper. The fill needle is also deliberately thick and blunt. Change to a hypodermic needle of the correct gauge before giving the medication.
Do you sell needles to private individuals?
The range is aimed at healthcare, care services, training and businesses, but orders are accepted from all customers.
