Frequently asked questions about absorbent dressings
When is an absorbent dressing needed instead of a compress?
When the wound is exuding. A compress covers and protects, whereas an absorbent dressing is thicker and takes up more fluid — after surgery, for example, with larger grazes or with wounds that leak through ordinary compresses. With heavily exuding wounds it is better to change often than to apply something thicker.
What does high-level clean mean compared with sterile?
Sterile means that the pack is free from living micro-organisms and that the contents can be placed directly against an open wound. High-level clean has been through a lower level of processing and is used as an outer layer, as padding or for securing. The price difference is noticeable, which makes it worth choosing the right level.
How do you secure an absorbent dressing?
Classic absorbent dressings are held in place with a bandage, tape or adhesive dressing — expect the dressing to become heavy as it takes up fluid. Self-adhesive foam dressings stick to themselves and need no tape, which makes them easier on fingers, on hair-bearing skin and in settings where hands are wet.
