Injection needles
Injection needles are colour-coded by gauge — green 21G, blue 23G, orange 25G, grey 27G. The colours apply to needles and are not the same system as the one for peripheral venous catheters.
Injection needles from BD Microlance and KD-Fine in gauges 16G to 30G and lengths of 13–50 mm. Sold individually for the clinic and in packs of 100 for organisations that vaccinate or inject every day.

Frequently asked questions about injection needles
What do the colours on needles mean?
The colour states the needle's outer diameter in gauge according to an international standard: green 21G, blue 23G, orange 25G, brown 26G, grey 27G and yellow 30G. A higher G number means a thinner needle. The standard means that the same colour indicates the same gauge whichever brand you buy.
Is a green needle the same gauge as a green cannula?
No, and it is a classic mix-up. A green injection needle is 21G, while a green peripheral venous catheter is 18G — considerably thicker. Peripheral venous catheters have a colour scale of their own in which pink is 20G and blue is 22G. Always check the G number rather than the colour when ordering.
Which needle is used for vaccination?
That is determined by injection technique, the size of the patient and your own routine, not by the needle itself. Intramuscular injection calls for enough length to reach the muscle, while subcutaneous injection is given with a shorter and thinner needle. Follow the prescription and the vaccination schedule that apply where you work.
