Fire class and extinguishing agent

The rating states the type of fire for which the unit is tested: A for solid fibrous materials, B for flammable liquids, C for gas and F for cooking oil and fat. A powder extinguisher is versatile and frost-resistant, but discharged powder requires extensive cleaning. Foam and liquid agents have different properties and must be selected according to the product's stated rating.

Carbon-dioxide extinguishers leave no extinguishing-agent residue and are therefore often selected around sensitive electrical equipment, but CO2 needs particular care in small or low-lying spaces. Wet-chemical extinguishers are intended for deep-fat fryers and cooking oils. Presto LB9 uses liquid and a long discharge time to cool equipment containing lithium-ion batteries.

Size and positioning

For homes, Swedish civil-protection guidance normally recommends at least 6 kg of powder. Smaller units may complement the main extinguisher in a vehicle, boat or confined space, while larger models provide more agent for organisations and warehouses. Position the extinguisher visibly and near an exit, rather than behind the hazard you may need to approach.

Complete the installation with a fire blanket, extinguisher cabinet and clear fire signage. Follow the label, inspection interval and instructions. Evacuate and call the emergency services if the fire cannot immediately be handled safely.
