Soft bag or hard case

  • Soft carry bag — the setup most defibrillators ship with. Light, takes little room in the cabinet and normally has a pocket for spare pads. The right choice for a unit mounted on a wall that is rarely moved.
  • Hard case — foam-lined interior and rigid construction that withstands transport and impact. The right choice when the defibrillator travels by car, out on assignment or to training sessions, or is stored where it may get knocked about.
  • Backpack — for carrying the defibrillator alongside other equipment, for instance at event medical cover or in response teams.

The case is model-bound

The case is moulded for one particular unit, with cut-outs for the status light, handle and pad connector in the right places. A Philips case therefore does not fit a LIFEPAK, and the difference can run between generations within the same make. A few exceptions exist — the Philips hard case fits the HS1, FRx and FR3 — but never assume it: read the model designation on the unit's label first.

If you are replacing a worn case, it is worth checking the expiry dates on pads and battery at the same time. You will find them under pads and batteries.

What the case does not replace

A case protects against wear and transport — it offers no weather protection and does not replace a cabinet. If the defibrillator is to sit out in a public space, outdoors or in an unheated room, a cabinet with the right ingress protection is what applies; the IP ratings are covered in our guide to IP classification.

Vanliga frågor om defibrillator cases

Does one case fit several defibrillator models?

Rarely. The case is moulded for one particular unit, with cut-outs for the status light, handle and pad connector in fixed positions, and the difference can run between generations within the same make. Exceptions exist — the Philips hard case fits the HS1, FRx and FR3 — but always check the model designation on the unit's label.

Should I choose a soft bag or a hard case?

If the defibrillator sits on a wall and is rarely moved, the soft bag is enough, being lighter and less bulky. If it travels by car, out on assignment or to training sessions, the hard case is right: a foam-lined interior and rigid construction handle transport and impact far better.

Is there room for spare pads and a battery in the case?

Most models have a pocket for at least one spare set of pads, and several also for a spare battery. Capacity varies between makes and between soft bags and hard cases — check the specification of the case you choose if you plan to store spares with the unit.

Is a case enough protection outdoors?

No. The case protects against wear and impact during transport, not against weather, dust or cold. For a defibrillator kept outdoors or in an unheated space you need a cabinet with the right ingress protection rating, and for cold environments a heated one.
