What is a splint?
A splint is a support that limits movement of an injured body part before medical assessment and transport. Mouldable emergency splints can be adapted to the body part and secured according to the product instructions and local protocol. They do not replace examination, diagnosis or continued care.
What is the difference between rolled and folded SAM Splint?
Materials and function are identical within the equivalent size. The rolled 36-inch model is stored as a compact cylinder and flattened before shaping. The folded model lies flat in its package and is easier to stack. The choice mainly depends on how the emergency bag or storeroom is organised.
Which SAM Splint length should I choose?
The 36-inch / 91 cm model provides the largest area to shape and suits a broad equipment requirement. The 18-inch / 45 cm and 9-inch / 23 cm versions are more compact. Finger Splint is intended for very small body parts. Select according to training, intended use and local protocol.
Can a mouldable splint be cut and reused?
SAM Splint and Ferno Flex can be cut to smaller sizes according to their manufacturers. They are also described as cleanable and reusable. Always follow the current instructions for use and local hygiene procedures; never reuse a damaged, heavily contaminated or single-use product.
What should I do if I suspect a fracture?
Address life-threatening conditions first and call the emergency services if the person is seriously unwell or cannot be moved safely. Support the injured part in the least painful position and avoid unnecessary movement. Do not try to straighten a deformed limb. Arrange medical assessment.
