What is the difference between a peripheral IV cannula and a Venflon?
None — Venflon is BD's brand name, and it is used colloquially for peripheral IV cannulas whoever the manufacturer is, rather as steri-strip is used for suture strips. Peripheral venous cannula is the correct term. The differences between models concern ports, needlestick protection and material.
Which size of IV cannula should be chosen?
Pink 20G is the standard for adults and is enough for most infusions. Blue 22G is used for fragile veins, in the elderly and in children. Green 18G or wider is chosen for blood transfusion, contrast media and when volume has to go in quickly. Choose as fine as the treatment allows — a wider cannula puts more wear on the vein.
Are a green IV cannula and a green injection needle the same gauge?
No. A green IV cannula is 18G and 1.3 mm, while a green injection needle is 21G and 0.8 mm. The two product types have completely different colour scales, and the mix-up is common when ordering. Always check the G number in the item number rather than going by the colour.
