Ethicon
Ethicon's four suture families differ mainly in whether the thread is absorbed or has to be removed, and in how long it retains its strength in tissue.
Ethicon sutures in the most common gauges and needle types — Vicryl, Monocryl and PDS II as absorbable options, plus Ethilon for skin closures that are later removed.

Vanliga frågor om ethicon
What is the difference between Vicryl and Monocryl?
Both are absorbed, but Vicryl is braided and Monocryl monofilament. The braided structure gives better knot security and more grip, while the monofilament passes more easily through tissue with less friction. The choice depends on tissue and technique, and on what local protocol specifies.
How long does an absorbable suture last?
Absorption time varies between thread types and is stated by the manufacturer for each product. PDS II retains its strength longest of the materials here, Monocryl the shortest. Always check the manufacturer's figure for the item you use, as the time is also affected by tissue and patient.
What do the letters on the needle mean?
The letters describe the needle's shape and point. FS is a cutting needle for skin, CT a taper needle for soft tissue and fascia, and JB a smaller taper needle. The number after the letters indicates size, where a higher number means a smaller needle.
