The infusion sets

Both sets are 180 cm long, vented and PVC-free — the choice of plastic means the set can be used with medication that binds to plasticised PVC, where the amount reaching the patient would otherwise be reduced.

The difference between the two is the three-way stopcock: the version with a stopcock allows an injection to be given into the infusion without disconnecting the set, while the version without is simpler and has fewer connections that can leak or become contaminated.

Venting is needed when fluid is given from a glass bottle or another rigid container that does not collapse as it empties.

Nebulisation

The nebuliser kit comes with tubing and is intended for adults. It is used to deliver inhaled medication as an aerosol together with a driving gas or compressor.

Vanliga frågor om mediplast

Why a PVC-free infusion set?

Some medications bind to the plasticisers in PVC tubing, so part of the dose stays in the set instead of reaching the patient. A PVC-free set avoids this. Check the medication's own product information for which ones are affected.

When is venting needed on the set?

The vent lets air in so fluid can flow out of a container that does not collapse, such as a glass bottle or a rigid plastic bottle. If fluid is given from a soft bag that collapses on its own, no venting is needed.

What is the three-way stopcock used for?

The stopcock sits on the set and allows an injection to be given into the infusion, or the flow to be shut off temporarily, without disconnecting the tubing. That reduces the number of disconnections and therefore the occasions on which the system is opened.
