Surgical caps

Reusable surgical caps with printed patterns, in nine designs. They are machine washable and replace the disposable cap in theatre and clinic.

The cap covers the hair completely for the length of a shift and stays put without adjustment. What separates it from a disposable is that it lasts — and that the pattern is your own choice.

Nine patterns

The designs are whales, dinosaurs and volcanoes, dinosaurs and bats, stars and planets, unicorns, rabbits, blue with rabbits, flowers and leaves. Several were chosen with paediatric work in mind: a pattern gives a child something to talk about in a setting where everything else is masks and equipment.

The adult-neutral designs — leaves and flowers — work equally well in outpatient clinics, dentistry and veterinary practice as in theatre.

Washable instead of disposable

The caps are machine washed and used again and again. For a department going through disposables daily this is both a cost and a waste question; for the individual member of staff it is more often about fit, and about not wearing a cap that slides during the shift.

A washable cap also becomes personal in a way a disposable never can. Many people carry their own between wards and workplaces, which makes the pattern a marker of recognition among colleagues — and often the first thing an anxious patient comments on.

Frequently asked questions about surgical caps

Can the surgical caps be machine washed?

Yes, all of them are reusable and machine washable. That is the point of them — they are intended to replace the disposable cap and be used repeatedly, unlike the paper-based caps that are discarded after a single shift.

Do the caps fit long hair?

The caps are designed to cover the hair completely for the length of a shift. If you have a lot of hair, or very long hair, it is worth pinning it up first, exactly as with a disposable — the design is made to stay put, not to accommodate an updo.

Why patterned caps in healthcare?

Beyond the simple fact that it is nicer to wear something you chose yourself, the design serves a purpose in paediatric work. A child arriving at a theatre department otherwise sees only masks and green textile; a cap with whales or dinosaurs gives them something recognisable to focus on.

Are they used outside theatre?

Yes. The caps are just as common in outpatient clinics, dentistry, veterinary practice and sterile services. The adult-neutral patterns — leaves and flowers — are the usual choices there.
