The colour indicates the gauge of the needle — but the scale differs between injection needles and IV cannulas. Green is 21G on an injection needle and 18G on an IV cannula, so always read the gauge number on the packaging.

What does the colour on a needle or cannula mean?
The colour indicates the gauge, but the two scales are not the same. On injection needles to ISO 6009, green is 21G, blue 23G and pink 18G. On peripheral IV cannulas, green is instead 18G, pink 20G and blue 22G. Always read the gauge number on the packaging when switching between product types.
What is the difference between Luer Lock and Luer Slip?
Luer Lock screws onto the needle and will not come loose under pressure — the standard for infusion, drawing up through a filter and wherever the needle is under load. Luer Slip, which B. Braun calls Luer Solo, pushes on and comes off faster. If you are unsure about the pressure in the system: choose Luer Lock.
Which cannula size is most often used in adults?
Pink (20G) and green (18G) cover most adults in routine cannulation and most infusions. Blue (22G) suits fragile or narrow veins, for example in older patients. Rapid fluid or blood administration calls for white (17G) or grey (16G). BD Venflon Pro Safety and BD Nexiva are available in several sizes.
Which syringe size suits which purpose?
1–3 ml with fine graduations gives accurate dosing for small drug volumes and in children. 5–10 ml is used for ordinary injection and flushing, 20 ml for drawing up or larger volumes. B. Braun Omnifix and BD Emerald are available across the whole range, in both Luer Lock and Luer Slip.
What is a lancet and when is it used?
A lancet is a spring-loaded, safety-shielded instrument for capillary sampling — a blood sample from the fingertip instead of a vein, for example for glucose measurement. The puncture depth is chosen for the patient: shorter for infants and children, longer for adults.
