Examination

A Littmann stethoscope, a manual blood pressure monitor and basic examination instruments cover most of a clinical assessment in outpatient care, ambulance and field.

Stethoscopes, blood pressure monitors and examination instruments for everyday clinical work — not for home use. Littmann in every model, manual manometers, pulse oximeters and surgical instruments, chosen by anaesthetists and CPR instructors who use the equipment themselves.

The equipment for the clinical examination

Diagnostics with us brings together what a basic clinical assessment requires: stethoscopes, blood pressure monitors, surgical instruments such as scissors, forceps and haemostats, plus penlights, pulse oximeters and thermometers. The range is chosen for professional use — ambulance, clinic, healthcare training and field — not for checking your blood pressure at home.

Littmann carries the range

  • Littmann Classic III — the standard stethoscope for general clinical auscultation: heart, lungs and abdomen.
  • Littmann Cardiology IV and Master Cardiology — higher acoustic performance for cardiology and more difficult lung sounds.
  • Littmann CORE Digital — electronic sound amplification and noise reduction, for environments with a lot of background noise.
  • Littmann Classic II Pediatric and Infant — a smaller chestpiece for children and newborns.
  • Manual blood pressure monitors with a Boso manometer — aneroid measurement for clinical work, complemented by automatic models for quick screening.
  • Luxamed and Varta — penlights for pupil and neurological assessment. Nonin — a professional fingertip pulse oximeter for SpO2, pulse and perfusion index.
  • Braun Thermoscan — an ear thermometer for quick body temperature measurement, with lens covers that are changed between patients for hygiene reasons.

Surgical instruments belong here

Scissors, forceps, haemostats, scalpel handles, needle holders and suture scissors — the basic kit for wound care and minor surgical procedures sits in the diagnostics hub, not only in the theatre range. The selection spans Adson dressing forceps and Metzenbaum dissecting scissors through to haemostats in several sizes (Mosquito, Pean) and tick removers for primary care and field use — see the full range of surgical instruments.

How to choose the right equipment

Choose a stethoscope by what you mainly listen to: Classic III is enough for most clinical situations, while Cardiology IV and Master Cardiology are justified by cardiology or difficult lung sounds. Manual blood pressure measurement with an aneroid manometer is standard where the reading has to be verifiable by auscultation; automatic monitors suit quick screening of many patients. A penlight is used to assess pupil reaction and symmetry during a neurological examination — a simple but central tool in the clinical assessment. Instruments that are reused between patients — haemostats, needle holders, surgical scissors — need cleaning and sterilisation according to your own hygiene routines, just as the thermometer's lens cover is changed between every patient. There is more detail in our stethoscope guide and our blood pressure monitor guide.

Vanliga frågor om examination

Which Littmann stethoscope should I choose?

Classic III is the standard choice for general clinical auscultation and is enough for most examinations. Cardiology IV and Master Cardiology give higher acoustic performance and suit cardiology or lung sounds that are hard to interpret. CORE Digital adds electronic sound amplification for noisy environments. For children and newborns, Classic II Pediatric or Infant with a smaller chestpiece is used.

Manual or digital blood pressure monitor for clinical work?

Manual measurement with an aneroid manometer gives control through auscultation and is standard where the result has to be verifiable. Automatic monitors are faster when screening many patients but can be less reliable with an irregular heart rhythm. Many organisations have both: manual for assessment, automatic for routine checks.

How do you remove a tick safely?

Use pointed tick forceps and grip as close to the skin as possible, preferably around the tick's head rather than its body. Pull straight out with even pressure without twisting or squeezing the body, which can increase the risk of spreading infection. Clean the bite site afterwards and keep an eye on any redness of the skin over the following weeks.

What affects a pulse oximeter's reading?

A cold hand, poor peripheral circulation, nail varnish and vigorous movement all give unreliable SpO2 values. A professional fingertip pulse oximeter is normally more robust with a weak pulse signal than a simpler home model. The perfusion index, which shows the signal strength, is a good way to judge how reliable the reading is at that moment.

Do surgical instruments need sterilising between patients?

Reusable instruments such as haemostats, needle holders and surgical scissors must be cleaned and sterilised according to your hygiene routines before they are used on the next patient. The products are not supplied sterile for single use unless otherwise stated. Ask us if you need to combine them with single-use instruments for field or ambulance work.
