Tick remover — press or cross model

Both models do the same thing: they grip the tick as close to the skin as possible so that it can be pulled straight out. The press model works like ordinary tweezers and gives the most feel in the grip. The cross model is self-closing — it keeps its grip when you let go, which is an advantage with cold or shaky hands and when someone else has to hold the skin taut. Both are small enough to sit in the pocket of a hunting bag or a first aid kit.

Anatomical or surgical forceps

The difference is in the tip. An anatomical pair of forceps (dressing forceps) has serrated, toothless gripping surfaces and is used for swabs, tape and dressings. A surgical pair of forceps has teeth, usually 1x2, and grips skin and tissue with light pressure instead of crushing it. The Adson models are shorter and finer and are used for suturing and minor procedures, while packing and catheter forceps are long and made to reach deep.

Pointed splinter tweezers are a category of their own — narrow jaws for splinters, glass shards and grit in the skin.
