About the product
Ready-Heat II – heat without power for hypothermia and shock
Ready-Heat II is a self-heating single-use blanket developed for first aid and pre-hospital care. When the sealed outer pouch is opened, the iron powder in the heating panels reacts with oxygen in the air and the blanket starts warming immediately, with no battery, power or water. According to the manufacturer's instructions for use it reaches an operating temperature of at least 37.8 °C within 10–15 minutes and stays warm for up to 8 hours.
When it is used
The blanket is intended to prevent and treat cooling in an injured or shocked person: road accidents, injuries in the field, long waits for an ambulance, evacuation and transport. According to the manufacturer it also works at altitude and in low-oxygen environments, and the foam core makes it water-resistant. Place the blanket over clothing or an ordinary foil blanket – never directly on bare skin – and combine it with insulation from the ground, which otherwise draws heat faster than the blanket supplies it.
Safety
The maximum temperature may reach 52 °C. Do not use the blanket against bare skin, do not fold it and do not place weight on top, as this raises the temperature locally. People who cannot feel or signal heat themselves – the elderly, children, the unconscious, diabetics, people with frostbite or poor circulation – must be supervised continuously. Do not use in an oxygen-rich environment such as an oxygen tent. The panels must not be opened; the contents are harmful if swallowed.
Size and storage
At 86 × 122 cm and 794 g the blanket fits an emergency bag, a vehicle or the first-aid box at work. It comes in an oxygen-free, individually sealed pouch that must not be opened until the blanket is to be used. After use it is disposed of as ordinary waste.
